“do the trick” 其實和惡作劇無關。真正的意思你一定猜不到!


“Trick or treat. 不給糖就搗蛋”其實起源於多種文化和歷史。


從2000年前凱爾特人的夏末節傳統,到中世紀基督教的萬靈節習俗,19世紀初英國誕生了現代“不給糖就搗蛋”傳統的雛形,最終在美國各種文化交流融合,這項傳統逐漸紮根、變形,最終流行起來。

 

今天我們就來分享一些與trick有關的習慣用語吧!


01  do the trick


do the trick

02  bag of tricks


bag
是袋子;trick是訣竅、手法。Bag of tricks 顧名思義就是指“各種訣竅,種種手法”。


On-line thieves have developed a variety of crafty methods to try to deceive you. Beware of their bag of tricks!

網上竊賊想出了各種狡猾的辦法來騙人,要警惕他們的各種手法。

every trick in the book
意思是:

完成或實現某件事一切可能的方式,尤其是指那些精明的、狡猾的或道德上有問題的方式
 

I've tried every trick in the book to get him to notice me, and still no luck!

我想盡了一切辦法想讓他注意到我,可還是一點機會都沒有!


04   the oldest trick in the book


書裡面最老的把戲又是什麼意思呢?


Selling tourists fake artifacts is the oldest trick in the book—please don't fall for that one.

向遊客出售假冒文物是老把戲了,請不要上當。


05   teach an old dog new tricks  


teach an old dog new tricks
,教一隻老狗新把戲。這個片語的引申意思是“教某人一些新的技能,以改變長期的習慣或方式,尤其是指教一個堅持自己的方式、一成不變的老年人”。


It's great that you want to teach your grandpa how to use a computer, but just be aware that it can be hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

你想教爺爺使用電腦是很好的,但要知道,這會非常困難。


06   never miss a trick


never miss a trick
形容的是那些“隨時利用每一個機會為自己謀取利益、好處的人”。


Did you really try to make a quick buck during the hurricane? You never miss a trick, do you?

07   dirty trick


dirty trick
是一種「為了某人的利益而採取的不道德或不誠實的行為」。

 

I really wish you had been honest with me from the start about causing damage to my car. Blaming the neighbor was a real dirty trick.

我真希望你從一開始就對我坦白是你弄壞了我的車,責怪鄰居真是一個卑鄙的伎倆。


08   confidence game/trick  


confidence game/trick
裡的 confidence是“信任”而不是“自信”的意思,這種用法可追溯到19世紀中期。

 

看過英劇《Hustle》的夥伴們一定對這個詞不陌生:con man,這裡的con同樣也是confidence的意思。指「先獲得某人的信任,然後再欺騙他們的騙子」,而confidence game/trick 就是指這種騙人手法。
 

I almost let myself be taken in by her con game. She seemed so sincere.

我差點被她的騙術所騙——她看起來很真誠。
